A Muslim man in southern India hid his Hindu girlfriend in his bedroom for ten years without his parents or sister knowing because he feared he would never get their approval to marry her, reported The Times.
Rahman, 34, in Kerala state fell in love with his neighbour, Sajitha, 28, a Hindu, a decade ago.
Fearing that their parents would not allow them to marry, Rahman smuggled her into his bedroom. They plannned to rent a room of their own but were never able to save enough money and months turned into years, the report added.
Rahman had his meals in his bedroom and turned up the volume of the TV. When he left for work, he locked the bedroom. At night Sajitha climbed out of the window to stretch her legs, the report further said.
According to the report, the parents suspected that something was amiss but said nothing. When the couple finally left the room a few weeks ago without telling anyone, Rahman’s parents reported him missing. They were found living in their own flat.
The couple’s fear of being separated may have been unfounded. “I am so glad she is alive. We would never have objected to their marriage," Sajitha’s father told local media.
