A GRENADE explosion took place near a camp of the Indian Army near Dheerapul in Pathankot in the northern state of Punjab early on Monday (22).

According to police, some unidentified people riding motorcycles lobbed the explosive in front of the cantonment’s Triveni Gate and CCTV footage obtained from the scene was being verified.

“A grenade blast took place near Triveni Gate of an Army camp in Pathankot. Further investigation is underway. CCTVs footage will be probed,” Asian News International quoted Surendra Lamba, senior superintendent of police, Pathankot, as saying.

The police recovered parts of the grenade from the site but did not divulge much details about the incident.

No injuries were reported and an alert has been sounded in the area.

In early January 2016, the base of the Indian Air Force in Pathankot was attacked by heavily armed tourists in which two security personnel were killed in the initial fight and another succumbed to injuries hours later. In all, six soldiers were killed while a number of terrorists were eliminated. More than 20 people were injured.

The attack took place just days after Indian prime minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Lahore in Pakistan to meet then Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
