Shooter Aishwary Tomar breaks world record to win gold

INDIAN shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar set up a world record in the final of the ISSF junior world championships in Lima, Peru, on Monday (4) to bag gold in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.

Tomar, 20, equalled the junior world record score of 1185 in qualification to top the field.

He then went on to better the junior world record in the final with a score of 463.4, finishing nearly seven points ahead of the second-placed Lucas Kryzs of France. He won the silver with a score of 456.5.

The bronze went to Gavin Barnick of the US who scored 446.6.

Among other Indians in the fray were Sanskar Havelia who finished 11th, Pankaj Mukheja 15th, Sartaj Tiwana 16th and Gurman Singh 22nd.

Naamya Kapoor wins gold in women’s 25m

Earlier in the day, India had another moment of glory as its teenage shooter Naamya Kapoor won the gold ahead of her celebrated opponent Manu Bhaker in the women’s 25m pistol event.

While Kapoor shot 36 in the final, France’s Camille Jedrzejewski won the silver with 33 points and Bhaker, who has already won three gold medals in the tournament, ended with bronze, with 31 points. Another Indian shooter Rhythm Sangwan finished fourth as the country dominated the event.

Kapoor was sixth in the qualification with a total of 580 while Bhaker (587) and Sangwan (586) grabbed the top two spots.

India lead the table with eight gold, six silver and three bronze medals for a total of 17 medals.

This is the first multi-discipline shooting event since the Tokyo Olympics, with 32 nations and nearly 370 athletes participating.
