Two-time champions Argentina faced one of their biggest upsets in the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday (22) when they lost to a spirited Saudi Arabia 1-2 despite taking an early lead, thanks to a successful penalty strike from their captain Lionel Messi who is playing his final edition and is yet to win the title once.
Messi put Argentina ahead in the 10th minute but the Asian side, the lowest-ranked team in the fray in this edition in Qatar and placed 48 places below the reigning Copa America champions, scored twice within seven minutes after the break to take a decisive lead. Saleh Al-Shehri scored in the 48th minute while Salem Al-Dawsari in the 53th minute to give the Saudis a vital lead that their defence did well to defend.
Argentina's defeat left their fans shocked as Argentina now have a mountain to climb to make it to the second round and progress beyond to see Messi match the legendary Diego Maradona who had won them the trophy in a memorable edition in 1986.
