WHILE India is generally obsessed with its prime minister Narendra Modi in these times, another Modi — a less discussed one over the past many years — stole the headlines on Thursday (14) by announcing that he is dating actor model-turned-actor Sushmita Sen, a former Miss Universe.

Modi, a former chairman of the Indian Premier League who currently stays in the UK after being found guilty of misconduct, indiscipline and financial irregularities, broke the internet by sharing many pictures of himself with Sen while making the announcement.

In a pinned tweet with pictures of the duo that went viral, Modi said, “Just back in london after a whirling global tour #maldives # sardinia with the families – not to mention my #better looking partner @sushmitasen47 – a new beginning a new life finally. Over the moon. πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ₯°πŸ’•πŸ’žπŸ’–πŸ’˜πŸ’“. In love does not mean marriage YET. BUT ONE THAT For sure”

In another one, Modi clarified, “Just for clarity. Not married – just dating each other. That too it will happen one day. πŸ™πŸΎπŸ™πŸΎπŸ™πŸΎπŸ™πŸΎ”

However, the former cricket administrator was found tagging not the original Sen (whose Twitter handle is @thesushmitasen) but a parody account which calls itself “proudly parody”.

‘Reply my SMS’, Modi tweeted in 2013

Amid all the buzz, eagle-eyed netizens also dug up old posts from Modi’s account where he had mentioned something or the other about the woman.

Consequently, a nine-year-old tweet stole the show. It was in April 2013 when Modi wrote a tweet (he tagged the original Sen in that) saying, “Okay I commit β€œ@thesushmitasen: @LalitKModi you are too kind. However, promises are meant to be broken, commitments are honoured. Cheers love. Here is to 47.” To that, Sen replied, β€œGotcha 47.”

Modi then said, β€œReply my SMS.”

Sen’s actor brother ‘pleasantly surprised’

Hours after Modi’s revelations, Rajeev Sen, the brother of Sushmita, said he was surprised by the news. When he was asked about the development, Rajeev, a television actor, told ETimes, “I am pleasantly surprised. I will speak to my sister before I say anything. I wasn’t aware of it at all. My sister is yet to confirm this from her end, so, I can’t comment as of now.”

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh was among the first India celebrities to respond to Modi’s announcement. He dropped a red heart emoji and an evil emoji in the comment section of the post that Modi made on Instagram.

Modi, 56, was previously married to Minal Sagrani in 1991. They have two children — Ruchir and Aliya — from the marriage while Sagrani, who died of cancer in 2018, also had a daughter Karima from her past marriage.

Forty-six-year-old Sen, on the other hand, hasn’t married and broke up with partner Rohman Shawl a few months ago. In a recent conversation with actor-turned-writer Twinkle Khanna, Sen said, β€œI came close to getting married thrice, all three times God saved me. I can’t tell you what disasters followed with their respective lives. God protected me, also because God is protecting these two kids, he can’t let me get into a messy affair.”

She has two adopted daughters Renee and Alishah.
