What is The Scandal about?
The Scandal is a remake of the 2003 South Korean film Untold Scandal, which was loosely based on the 1782 French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
Set in 18th-century Korea, the series follows Lady Cho, played by Ye-jin, a woman whose ambitions and hidden desires lead her into a dangerous game of seduction and manipulation.
She enlists her cousin Cho-won, played by Chang-wook, to pursue a young woman, but his feelings become more complicated when he falls for Lady Suk.
Nana plays Hui-yeon, a widow who becomes unknowingly caught up in their wager.
For Ye-jin, The Scandal marks her return to series television after six years. She was last seen in the hit Netflix drama Crash Landing on You, which also starred Hyun Bin.
Speaking about Lady Cho, Ye-jin said the character is difficult to define as simply a hero or villain because of her hidden desires and need for validation.
Chang-wook, meanwhile, said he was drawn to the way the series explores the power dynamics between its characters.
