Amid crisis with Mizoram, Assam settles dispute with Nagaland

AT a time when the two northeastern Indian states of Assam and Mizoram have locked horns over their border dispute that turned violent last week, resulting in the death of six policemen on the Assamese side, yet another inter-state border in the region came in the headlines for the right reasons.

Assam has boundary disputes with a number of neighbouring states in the northeast besides Mizoram and one of them is Nagaland. On Saturday (31), the chief secretaries of the two states met and agreed to immediately withdraw security forces from locations near their border.

According to a joint statement which was released after the meeting held in Nagaland’s Dimapur, the two sides decided to maintain peace in the disputed zones, known as Ao Senden village and Vikuto village in Nagaland and Jankhona Nala/Nagajankha and Compartment No.2 in Assam.

Officials from both sides agreed that both sides would withdraw their security personnel from the border simultaneously to their respective base camps within 24 hours.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted about the matter in a series of tweets. In one, he said, “In a major breakthrough towards de-escalating tensions at Assam-Nagaland border, the two Chief Secretaries have arrived at an understanding to immediately withdraw states’ forces from border locations to their respective base camps.”

“This is a historic step in our relations. My gratitude to CM Neiphiu Rio for working with Assam in restoring peace on the border. Assam is committed to ensuring peace along all its borders and strives for social and economic prosperity of NorthEast region,” he added.
