In Glasgow, Modi meets & greets NRIs ahead of COP26

INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi is a popular leader among the Indian diaspora and it becomes evident whenever he visits overseas. On Monday (1), scenes of him meeting and greeting excited members of the Indian community in the city of Glasgow in Scotland were seen ahead of his participation in COP26 – the 26th session of the Conference to Parties.

“Strengthening our people-to-people bonds. Indian community members and Indologists gather in Glasgow to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” India’s external affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet.

COP26, which kicked off on Sunday (31), is being seen as a crucial initiative to save Planet Earth from the devastating impact of climate change. Participants at the event are expected to work to achieve the completion of the implementation guidelines agreed at the 2015 Paris climate deal; mobilisation of climate finance; keeping in reach the Paris Agreement goals of limiting the rise in global temperatures, etc.

Indian High Commissioner to UK Gaitri Issar Kumar said in an interview with Asian News International that Cop26 is going to be a multilateral event and an opportunity for “Prime Ministers of India and the UK to sit together and review the implementation, the progress that had been made on the roadmap 2030 in May 2021”.

Cop26 is set to take place under the presidency of the UK partnering with Italy which played host to the G20 Summit preceding it and the high-level segment of the event, which is titled the World Leaders’ Summit, will be attended by heads of state and government of more than 120 nations.

Modi arrived in Glasgow on Sunday (31) and is set to meet his British counterpart Boris Johnson over bilateral issues besides attending the crucial climate event.

Modi is also scheduled to launch two key initiatives under the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the International Solar Alliance at COP26.
