THE National Investigation Agency was on Tuesday (29) given the charge of carrying out probe into the drone attack on the Indian Air Force station in Jammu early on Sunday (27).

The ministry of home affairs took the decision to hand over the investigation into the first-of-its-kind terror strike that damaged a building and left two personnel slightly injured. “The investigation into the attack on the Jammu air force station has been handed over to the NIA,” a home ministry spokesperson said.

Two bombs were dropped at the air force base in Jammu in the early hours of Sunday in what was the first-ever instance of Pakistan-based terrorists deploying drones to attack vital military installations. The explosions occurred within a gap of six minutes and the first of them ripped off the roof of a building at the technical area of the airport manned by the air force in Satwari area on the outskirts of Jammu. The second blast happened on the ground.

According to officials, the explosive material dropped by the drones might have been manufactured using a cocktail featuring RDX but it was yet to be confirmed.

The flight path of the drones was yet to be determined as the investigators were scanning the CCTV footage, including those gathered from cameras installed on the boundary walls of the airport. The officials, however, said that all the CCTV cameras focused on the roadside. The drones that dropped the bombs were either flown back across the border into Pakistan, which is around 2.5 miles from the Jammu airport, or to some other destination.

The air force station remained out of bounds for all a day but the probe teams, including one from the national investigative agency, which picked every bit of evidence which was found on the ground.

A day after the Sunday attacks, Indian troops thwarted a fresh attempt to attack a military installation with drones. Indian defence sources said the alert personnel fired at two drones that were found hovering over the Ratnuchak-Kaluchak military area along the Jammu-Pathankot highway on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday (28).
