Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, one of India’s main opposition faces, on Wednesday (1) slammed the Narendra Modi government saying its ‘mitr kaal’ budget presented on the day lacked vision for creating employment and tackling inflation. He also alleged that the government has no roadmap to build the country’s future.

Gandhi’s ‘mitr kaal’ (days to help friends) jibe came to mock the budget as one which only aids the rich allies of the government after Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who presented it, called it the first of the ‘Amrit Kaal’ or the golden era.

The reaction of Gandhi, who completed his months-long ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ (Unite India March) earlier this week in Jammu and Kashmir, came after Sitharaman presented the budget for 2023-24 fiscal. In the budget, the government increased personal income-tax rebate slabs; doled out sops on small savings and announced one the biggest hikes in capital spending in a decade.

“‘Mitr Kaal’ Budget has: NO vision to create Jobs. NO plan to tackle Mehngai. NO intent to stem Inequality. 1% richest own 40% of the wealth, 50% poorest pay 64% of GST, 42% youth are unemployed — yet, PM doesn’t Care!” Gandhi, 52, said in a tweet.

“This Budget proves Govt has NO roadmap to build India’s future,” the former president of the Congress said.
