INDIA’s chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Saturday (17) said 12 states in the country have more women voters than men and it showed a “very healthy sign” signifying greater participation in the electoral cycle in a country which has a sex ratio of 948 women to every 1,000 men.

A total of 471 million women voters were registered in the electoral roll in the country, it was learnt.

Kumar, who announced the schedule of the general elections and polls in a number of states besides some by-elections at a press conference in New Delhi, said, “There are 12 such states where the gender ratio is over 1000 which means that number of women voters is more than males and 1.89 crore new voters have joined, out of them in the age group of 18-19 years there are 85.3 lakh women electors so they are going side by side so that is a very healthy sign that women are also participating equally in our elections.”

He, however, did not name the 12 states.

The general elections will be held in seven phases starting April 19 and continue till June 1. The results will be declared on June 4. Elections will also be held in four Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha and 26 state constituencies.

Polling was also held in seven phases in the general elections of 2019. Over 912 million voters were eligible to cast ballots in that election, a number which has grown to 970 million this year.

Gender-wise, 473 million male voters are eligible to vote in the 2019 elections as against 438 million female voters.
