Flight arrivals suspended in Chennai due to heavy rain

AUTHORITIES at Chennai International Airport in Chennai, the capital of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on Thursday (11) due to severe rain and heavy crosswinds.

The arrivals remained suspended between 1.15 pm and 6 pm local time. The departures would, however, continue.

“Due to severe rains and heavy cross winds, arrivals at #AAI Chennai Airport will remain suspended from 1315 hrs to 1800 hrs, today. Departures will continue. The decision has been taken considering the safety aspect of passengers and the severity of the wind, @AAI_Official” Chennai Airport tweeted.

More than 10 lives have been lost in the heavy rain in the state so far.

Tamil Nadu revenue department principal secretary Kumar Jayanth told Asian News International, “Till now, 14 people have lost their lives in the state due to heavy rains. Due to overnight rainfall, there is waterlogging in parts of Chennai on Thursday.”

Jayanth added that 13 waterlogged subways in the city would be cleared and 160 fallen trees have been removed.

“In the last four days, almost 20 lakh people have been given food packets in Chennai,” he added.
