Jaishankar meets top US Indo-Pacific commander to boost maritime security ties

India's external affairs minister and the commander of US forces in the Indo-Pacific discussed maritime security and emerging technology during a six-day visit aimed at strengthening the two countries' defense partnership.

INDIA's external affairs minister S Jaishankar held talks Sunday with Admiral Samuel J Paparo, commander of US Indo-Pacific Command, focusing on boosting maritime security cooperation between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific.

Paparo arrived Saturday for a six-day visit to India to advance the US-India Major Defense Partnership and deepen military-to-military ties.


"Glad to meet @USPACOM Commander Adm. Samuel J Paparo. Discussed advancing our security partnership and maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific," Jaishankar said on social media.

Technology and maritime security on the agenda

The command plays a key role in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific by promoting security cooperation and responding to contingencies.

According to a US Embassy readout, Paparo will discuss shared security priorities with Indian officials, including digital transformation, emerging technologies and maintaining regional strategic stability.

"From emerging technology to maritime security, the United States and India are building a defense partnership equipped to meet the challenges of the future," the readout said.

"Admiral Paparo's visit underscores the strength of the Major Defense Partnership and reaffirms the United States' enduring presence and interests in the Indian Ocean region."
