Ahead of polls, Indian transport minister promises US-like roads in Uttar Pradesh

AT a time when Indian prime minister Narendra Modi is visiting the poll-bound state of Uttar Pradesh frequently to inaugurate projects, including his constituency Varanasi, Nitin Gadkari, the transport minister of his government, has said that plans are on to invest Rs 5 lakh crore (£49.5 million) on road projects in the state in the next five years if the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retains power there in the 2022 elections.

He said his ministry will make the roads of Uttar Pradesh as good as the roads of America.

Speaking at the laying of the foundation stone of bypass road projects in a number of places in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday (25), Gadkari said, “Rs 5 lakh crore will be invested in roads projects in Uttar Pradesh in the next 5 years if BJP comes to power again. I will make the roads of Uttar Pradesh as good as the roads of America.

“Vote for the double engine government under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath and Keshav Prasad Maurya in the upcoming election, we will develop the state and it will be compared with the states in the US.”

Adityanath is currently the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and will seek his second mandate in the upcoming elections.

Gadkari also said that it was the dream of former Indian prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to connect all villages of the country with roads and highways. Saturday was also the 97th birth anniversary of Vajpayee who passed away in 2018. He had played a key role in reforming India’s road connectivity.
