US president Joe Biden's on-air goof-ups is not something new for the world to know. The leader, who will turn 80 in November, has been mocked by his opponents on many occasions ahead of the American presidential election in 2020 because of alleged slip of tongues or awkward gaffes.
On Wednesday (21), the world was shocked by yet another such incident when Biden, the 'most powerful man on earth', appeared lost on stage during an event after delivering an address. After his speech at the Global Fund's Seventh Replenishment Conference in New York, the veteran turned to exit the podium but suddenly paused and looked confused and lost.
He was also seen saying something but the words were inaudible because of the spectators' applause. Videos of the awkward moment of the US president surfaced on social media and netizens reacted to them whole-heartedly. But there were also those who came to his support and mocked his predecessor Donald Trump, a mercurial individual, in return, suggesting that a political tug-of-war was in play.
In his address at the event which was organised to raise funds to fight diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, Biden thanked all the participants for their contributions.
"Thank you for fighting for what counts. This is all about saving lives - there's no ambiguity here - working with partners to ensure that all communities are healthy and strong - at least have a shot at being healthy and strong; that people everywhere can live in dignity," the president said, according to the speech uploaded on the White House website.
"Let's demonstrate our collective power to take on challenges that matter most in people's lives and deliver progress. We have so much - so much to do, so let's get to work. And thank you all for all you're doing," he further said.
But as he turned to step down from the podium, Biden stopped and wondered what he should do next. The host, meanwhile, read out a thank you note which drew Biden's attention.
In April, a video showed Biden stretching his hand out for a handshake after a speech with no one around.
Meanwhile, a staggering $14.25 billion were raised at the event.
Here are some reactions to Biden's 'hare before the headlight' moment:
