For a Hyderabad family, what should have been the beginning of a new chapter has instead turned into a desperate wait for answers and a way to bring their son home.
Mohammed Jaber Hussain, 27, a civil engineer from Santoshnagar, Hyderabad, was found dead at his home in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Monday (14), just 17 days after he got married in Texas. He had returned to Massachusetts shortly after his wedding, where he had been living and working.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as his family waits for the autopsy and medical reports that could establish what happened.
A morning call, then devastating news
According to Jaber’s father, Mohammed Zakir Hussain, his son spoke to his mother by phone at around 8 a.m. on September 14 and appeared to be fine.
Later that day, the family received the news that Jaber had died.
There are differing accounts in reports about who informed the family. Some reports said Jaber’s roommate contacted them and told them he had died in his sleep. His father, however, told Hyderabad-based Siasat that Jaber’s wife called the family at around 5:15 p.m.
Speaking about the final conversation, Zakir Hussain said, “Jaber spoke to his mother at 8am on Monday, and he sounded fine at that time. At 5:15pm, Jaber's wife informed us that he had passed away while sleeping.”
The family has not yet received a confirmed cause of death. An autopsy and medical reports are still awaited.
He had built a life in the US
Jaber moved to the United States in 2021 to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. He graduated in 2023 and subsequently gained professional experience through an internship before joining Green International Affiliates Inc.
He worked with the company for around three years before moving to Massachusetts-based engineering firm Lochner in June this year.
His sudden death has left his family facing not only grief but also the practical challenge of bringing his remains back to India.
Jaber was his parents’ only son and his sister’s only brother, making the loss especially difficult for the family.
Family seeks help to bring him home
The family has described itself as economically weak and says it cannot easily manage the expenses involved in repatriating Jaber’s remains from the United States.
Seeking assistance, they approached Majlis Bachao Tehreek spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan, who has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar requesting government intervention.
The appeal asks the Indian Embassy in Washington or the Consulate General in New York to coordinate with US authorities and assist the family with the repatriation process and associated costs.
“At this hour of unimaginable grief, the family needs the support of the Government of India,” Khan said.
Jaber’s father is also reportedly trying to obtain a US visa so that he can travel to the country and be with his son’s remains.
For now, the family remains caught between grief and uncertainty. There is no confirmed timeline for when Jaber’s remains will reach Hyderabad, while his loved ones continue to wait for the medical findings that may finally explain what happened to the young engineer.
