Swara Bhasker has recalled how she reacted to the Supreme Court’s 2019 Ayodhya verdict, saying she felt deeply upset by the decision and reached out to Muslim friends afterward.
Speaking on The Midnight Hour podcast, the actor said she messaged Muslim people in her phone, including Bollywood stars Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. She recalled telling them that, as a Hindu, she was “really sorry” and “really ashamed” and that she did not agree with the verdict.
What Swara Bhasker recalled about the verdict
The Ayodhya case concerned a long-running dispute over a site in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. On November 9, 2019, a five-judge Supreme Court bench unanimously ruled that the disputed land should be used for the construction of a Ram temple.
The court also directed the government to provide five acres of alternative land to the Sunni Central Waqf Board for the construction of a mosque.
Looking back at the day of the judgment, Swara said she was “so upset” and felt the decision was unfair. She said she wanted her Muslim friends to know that she personally did not support the outcome.
“I just want you to know that I’m really sorry, I am really ashamed, and I don’t agree with this,” she recalled saying in her messages.
Why she reached out to the Khans
Swara said she contacted “all the Muslims” in her phone book after the verdict. Among those she mentioned were Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman, making the revelation one of the more unexpected details from her interview.
Her comments have since drawn reactions on social media, with some users criticizing her response to the Supreme Court judgment.
The reactions reflect the continuing sensitivity surrounding the Ayodhya dispute, which has remained a major subject of public and political debate in India.
Swara also discussed Umar Khalid
During the same podcast conversation, Swara spoke about how Umar Khalid, a former JNU student leader and research scholar, helped connect her with her husband, Fahad Ahmad.
Fahad said Khalid, who was a close friend, gave him Swara’s phone number and encouraged him to call her. Swara also described Khalid as their “cupid” for bringing them together.
Swara and Fahad first crossed paths during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, where both were involved. They registered their marriage under the Special Marriage Act in February 2023 and welcomed their daughter, Raabiyaa, in September that year.
