Indian prime minister Narendra Modi received congratulations from world leaders after becoming India’s longest continuously serving elected prime minister. On Wednesday (10), Modi completed 4,399 uninterrupted days in office, surpassing the record held by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

President Donald Trump congratulated Modi on the achievement and described him as a “Great One.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “He is a strong, healthy, and wise man, and will have many years of Greatness and Success ahead of him.”

Russia also praised Modi’s accomplishment. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called him the “doyen of all Indian Prime Ministers” in a felicitation speech shared by the Indian Embassy in Russia.

“Today, on 10th of June, Prime Minister Modi became the doyen of all Indian Prime Ministers. What does a doyen mean? A doyen is a person who is the Prime Minister of the country for the longest term,” Peskov said.

Peskov highlighted Modi’s rise from a modest background and his leadership of India. “He [Modi] himself descended from a common family and his career has elevated him to the position of the leader of the largest country in the world, almost one and a half billion people,” he said.

He added that under Modi’s leadership, “250 million people were lifted out of poverty.” Peskov also described India as a nation developing advanced technologies and becoming “one of the leading economic powers in the world with the fastest rates of economic growth and development.”

Speaking about ties between Moscow and New Delhi, Peskov said: “What is most important for us is that this is the country with which we are united by partnership.” He added, “The country with which we are developing trade and economic ties in all possible areas. Dialogue is ongoing, including in the most sensitive areas,” and expressed hope that Modi would continue strengthening India-Russia relations.

Several global leaders also extended their congratulations through social media posts. Among them were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Addressing Modi as a “dear friend,” Netanyahu congratulated him in a video message on becoming India’s longest-serving elected prime minister.

Von der Leyen praised Modi’s leadership, saying: “With you, India not only landed on the moon, it is shooting for the stars.” She also thanked him for cooperation in technology, mobility, security, defense, and trade.

Meloni highlighted the recently launched Special Strategic Partnership between India and Italy, while Merz said Germany looked forward to further strengthening strategic ties with India.

Carney said he looked forward to continued cooperation as Canada and India renewed their partnership. Sunak described the achievement as a “remarkable milestone” and said it was positive for the UK-India partnership.

Leaders from Sweden, Denmark, Cyprus, Ireland, the Maldives, South Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Australia, Nigeria, and Kenya also congratulated Modi, praising his leadership, public service, and contribution to India’s development and global standing.

Nehru served as India’s elected prime minister from 1952 until May 27, 1964, for 4,398 days. Modi, first elected in 2014, surpassed that record with an uninterrupted tenure of 4,399 days.
